Martial Discovery is discovering one’s self through martial arts. People take martial arts for a variety of reasons. It may be to learn to defend one’s self, to acquire discipline, to develop mental strength, or for physical activity. The great thing is that when one decides to practice martial arts, he is given the opportunity to realize all of these goals.
In the beginning, martial arts is physical - practicing the basics, doing drills, perfecting technique, and working on endurance. However, over time, one develops more than just physical strength. The components of inner strength are achieved: confidence, awareness, and self worth. These attributes will teach one to engage in physical altercation only when necessary.
Experience in martial arts does not necessarily mean that you are incapable of defeat. A person with no experience can sucker punch his opponent if the opponent is not aware. Martial arts will teach one to be aware of his surroundings at all times, using preventive measures first before engaging in a fight.
We are all familiar with the man who made martial arts mainstream – Bruce Lee. While he taught his students how to defend themselves, he also taught them to be mentally strong, to have confidence, and to utilize the Jeet Kune Do philosophy in everyday life. Apart from Bruce Lee, there is no one else that exemplifies this way of life other than Sifu Taky Kimura, Bruce Lee’s highest-ranking student and best friend.
Being a Japanese American, it is not surprising that Sifu Taky Kimura experienced racial discrimination and hardship. As a result of this, he lost his self worth. It was martial arts that allowed him to regain this. Through years of learning under Bruce Lee, he was able to overcome this obstacle and become a strong individual, inside and out.

Through the years many people have asked me about private lessons and their interest in learning and I simply have said no. But I feel that the time is NOW that we can share this beautiful art created by Bruce Lee to so many others around the world. Since 1983 I have been privileged to be a direct student of Bruce Lee’s highest ranked student and best friend, Taky Kimura at the Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute of Seattle Through the years, I have learned some much from Sifu Taky and our relationship went beyond student and teacher. We became the closest of friends, brothers, mentor, and my second father. I have told Sifu Taky that it is important to spread this art outside of Seattle or it will die in Seattle.
In 2012, we launched the Bruce Lee JKD App for the Apple and Android devices but unfortunately it was shut down 6 years later. But this is now our second chance to share this art for people who want to learn Jun fan Jeet Kune Do as close to the source as possible. This art you will be learning is what I call the Totality of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. Many years ago, I wrote an article explaining what I meant from the Totality of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. You cannot learn this fast, it takes TIME and you must move slowly to fully grasp Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do. Otherwise you will only be touching the surface and never reaching its essence and core. You will be learning the full circle of Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do from the beginning during the Seattle years, then the Oakland years, and then the Los Angeles years. During this time Bruce Lee adapted and changed his art based on the people he encountered, and it was always Sifu Taky Kimura that he confided in regularly on what these changes to his art were. Bruce Lee loved Taky and never held anything back from him. So what you will be learning is what Sifu Taky was taught by Sigung Bruce Lee through the years in Seattle and when he left to Oakland and Los Angeles. To truly understand Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do you must learn the Full Circle from the beginning, middle, and end. Sifu Taky never cared what others were doing outside of Seattle and he always told me he knew where Bruce wanted to take his art.
